  17. <p>    Sixty-two members of Lebanon's parliament convened last
  18. week in Saudi Arabia, meeting outside the country to avoid
  19. being intimidated by Syrian troops, who have occupied Beirut for
  20. the past three years. The session's goal: to enact political
  21. reforms called for in an Arab League peace plan that produced
  22. a cease-fire two weeks ago in the six-month-old civil war
  23. pitting Lebanon's Christians against the Syrians and their
  24. Muslim allies. The meeting will continue, said one member,
  25. "however long that takes."

  27. <p>    Despite occasional gunfire, the truce held last week,
  28. allowing a semblance of normality to return to Beirut. Its
  29. residents have watched cease-fires come and go, but one
  30. promising tip-off suggests this one will last for a while. The
  31. price of plate glass for replacing the thousands of windowpanes
  32. shattered by gunfire and artillery barrages quadrupled within
  33. hours.
